Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us must work from home. This includes the requirement for remote computer access via Microsoft's Remote Desktop application, which most users will use to link their computers at home and work. However, if you're on the go, you may also use an Apple or Android mobile to log into a remote PC.
On your mobile device, you can view the screen, open files, and use applications just as readily (though perhaps not as rapidly) as if sitting in front of that computer. Here's how to access a distant computer using the Remote Desktop smartphone app.
A computer must first be configured correctly to be accessed remotely. On the machine you want to access, go to Settings > System > Remote Desktop and make sure the Enable Remote Desktop switch is set on.

Click the relevant Show settings link to view or edit either option, but you may leave them both on for now.
Ensure the Configure Network Level Authentication box is checked before clicking the Advanced Options link. By adding a degree of security, this function deters malicious users and unauthorized visitors.
Ignore the section for external connections if you use a VPN or another method to connect to the computer on the same network at home or work. The default port to watch for and accept a remote connection is displayed in the section for the Remote Desktop port.
Please write down the PC's name while you're here because you'll need it later to set up the connection.

On the remote PC, access is granted immediately to any administrative account user. Your best option is to log in remotely using the Microsoft Account, or enterprise account you use to sign into Windows.
Click the Select users that can remotely access this PC link at the bottom if you want to grant remote access to a different account. After entering the username for the account you wish to use, click Add.
You can now look at your mobile device. Install the Remote Desktop app from the Apple App Store to use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to connect to the computer. Open the application, and select Add PC from the menu by tapping the + button in the top-right corner.
Enter the computer's name or IP address in the PC Name section of the Add PC window. In the User Account field, enter the account name you want to use. If you prefer to enter the name manually every time for security reasons, leave the field set to "Ask When Required."
To provide a more practical designation for this relationship, give a name in the Friendly Name area. Usually, you would leave the switch for Admin Mode off, but doing so connects you to a console session where you can control a Windows server. Right and left mouse buttons can be switched by selecting the Swap Mouse Buttons option.
If your company employs a Remote Desktop Gateway to secure remote connections, you need to enable and configure the option for Gateway in the Gateway section.
To access any functions on your device during a remote connection, swipe down to the Device & Audio Redirection section. On this device, you should probably direct the sound to play. If you intend to copy and paste information back and forth, you might also want to enable the clipboard. You can also help with the microphone, camera, and remote storage. When finished, tap Save in the upper-right corner.
The program will display an icon for the machine you want to visit. To establish the connection, tap that icon. Remote Desktop could ask you to confirm your reference when you try to access the computer for the first time. Enable Tap Accept after selecting Don't ask me for links to this machine again.
The distant computer ought to then be accessible to you. Almost anything you could do in front of the computer is now possible, including opening apps and windows and controlling the desktop.
The app has a small toolbar at the top that you can use to control your remote session. It lets you jump around, zoom in and out, and display your device's keyboard.
To examine all of your remote connections, tap the middle icon. To move to another session, choose a remote connection. The top of this page has a toolbar all its own. Tap the Home icon to return to the home screen, where you can add or access another link. Toggle between touch-screen and mouse modes by tapping the Hand or Mouse icons.
Tap the X button in the link's thumbnail to break the remote connection for that session. If not, click Disconnect All PCs to cancel all currently running sessions.
