Technology is in its advancement phase nowadays. But with advancement, there comes a lot of bugs, and it becomes necessary to fix it. When talking about bugs, do you ever think of why your system applications stop working or why you receive a Windows notification stating that a program is not responding? Like the right message is "The application is not responding" or a similar statement such as "The program has stopped working". This surely can be a case of system applications not working. Now you would think what type of system application programs must be there which displays such a kind of message when asked to open. Well, dear readers, let us inform you that such statements may be shown with any program and are generally displayed with three options(depending on the windows version): close the program; wait for it to respond, and check for a solution and restart the program. What happens when you close the program is, the program allows you to bypass the notification but does not solve the problem itself,(you continue to receive the same message when trying to run the program). Usually, you can wait for the program to respond, but in most cases, what happens is, it will not respond after a certain amount of time. It will keep displaying "the application is not responding" message, which can only be closed by using Windows Task Manager or restarting the computer. In this article, we will read about the various reasons responsible for system applications not working and the different steps that we can follow to troubleshoot the same.

Reasons: Why are the system applications not working?

  1. When your laptop computer is infected with malware.
  2. When there is a conflict between two or more programs.
  3. When there is a lack of computer resources.
  4. And system/program files or registry entries are corrupted.

To solve all these problems, you can run a system file checker, run a performance diagnostic tool, scan your laptop computer for malware, reinstall a program, update Windows, perform a clean boot, or run the DISM tool. Now we will move forward and look into how to apply these troubleshooting methods to resolve the "System applications not working" message display on the screen.

Perform a Clean Boot:

When we first open the Windows with regular start-up operation, several applications and services start automatically and then run in the background. The programs which start automatically include basic system processes, antivirus software, system utility applications and other software that has been previously installed at some point of time. With all these applications and services running in the program can cause software conflicts. A clean boot helps to remove the software conflicts when a program is installed or updated. A clean boot is performed to start Windows using a minimal set of drivers and software programs. One or more installed programs may be interfering with the plan that causes the "System applications not working" problem. You can perform the following steps to perform a clean boot:

  1. Type "System Configuration" in Windows search and click on it.
  2. Now when system configuration windows open, you will see five different tabs: General, Boot, Services, Startup and Tools. In this method, we will use Services and Start-up tabs.
  3. Click on Services tab and check the box named "Hide all Microsoft services". By doing this, all Microsoft services will be hidden, and only third party services remain.
  4. Now, click on "Disable all" to disable all non-Microsoft services.
  5. Now click the start-up tab and then click "Open Task Manager".
  6. Under the task manager start-up tab, select all enabled applications and disable them one by one by choosing each application and clicking the "Disable" button.
  7. Once all programs are disabled, close task manager, and click "ok" in the System configuration start-up tab.
  8. Now you can restart your computer and check if the particular program is still causing the message to be displayed.
  9. If the program works and messages no longer occur, you will need to determine which program was interfering with it. You can check it by enabling the disabled program one by one. If you find a problematic plan, then consider uninstalling it.

Scan your System:

Having a malware infection is very common for laptops. It is so possible that a virus or malware can stop some programs from working correctly and causing the "System applications not working" problem. So to check if there is any malware infection, causing the pain you have to run a quick scan to your system using antivirus software. Well, there are windows defenders(a built-in antivirus program), which will protect the computer against viruses, spyware and malicious software. As an alternative, you can run third-party antivirus software, if you have installed it.

To run a full system scan using Windows Defender, type virus in search and click on the "Virus and Threat Protection". In the virus and threat, protection window clicks on "Run a new Advanced Scan" option. There you will see three options: Full; Custom; and Windows Defender Offline. It is feasible to choose "Full Scan", it will check all the files and programs running on your hard disk. Note that it will take some time, usually an hour. Now click on Scan Now when the Full Scan option is selected. If you have third-party antivirus software installed, you can use that rather than Windows Defender. From our top antivirus malware list, choose a virus and malware scanner.

Now, this write-up describes how to run the System File Checker tool(SFC.exe) to scan system files and repair any missing or corrupted ones. If a Windows Resource Protection(WRP) file is missing or corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected. Like some Windows function might fail, or windows will crash. The "SFC scan now" is a command prompt, command which is used to run system file checker. There are various CFC commands and this SFC fc scan now" is one of them.  To run command prompt, type "command prompt" in search, right-click on it, and select "Run AS Administrator" from the drop-down menu to run it with administrator privileges. When you choose this option, a user account control prompt will appear asking if you would like to allow the Command Prompt to make changes to your computer. Click Yes.

Now if you want to use the command, in the command prompt window type "SFC/scannow" command and press enter on the keyboard to execute it. System File Checker will start and should take about 15 minutes to complete the Scan. Wait for the process to complete and then restart the system to fix System applications not working error. If the SFC scan does not fix the problem or you cannot run the SFC scan, run a Deployment Image Servicing and Management(DISM) Scan and then try to rerun the SFC scan. DISM can be used to repair and prepare Windows images, including the Windows Recovery Environment, Windows Setup and Windows PE. To run a DISM scan, open command prompt and type this command: "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /restorehealth". Press enter on the keyboard to execute it.

Temporarily Disable Your Antivirus Software: We did mention scanning your system for viruses and malware; however, you can also try to disable the antivirus software temporarily. The installed antivirus software may be interfering with the program and causing the "System applications not working" issue. To check whether the installed third-party antivirus software is not the culprit, we thus recommend to disable it.

Then relaunch the program and check if the problem persists. If disabling the antivirus software helps, then you can switch to another product, or you can reinstall the currently-installed software to resolve System applications not working issue.

Check For Registry Issue: If there are registry corruptions, missing shared DLLs, unused file extensions, ActiveX and class issues, obsolete software, etc. you can quickly scan for these issues using CCleaner Software and fix them.

This software is a small, practical utility for computers running Microsoft Windows. This software cleans junk and issues that accumulate over time: temporary files, broken shortcuts and other problems. It also protects privacy, cleans browsing history and temporary internet files. CCleaner will also clean redundant files from various programs, thus saving hard disk space, remove unneeded entries in Windows Registry, help install software and select which program starts with Windows. When downloaded, install CCleaner and open it. Select "Registry" on the left pane and click "Scan for Issues". It will look for any registry issues on your laptop computer. To clean or fix them, click "Fix selected Issues". Close CCleaner when finished and check if the message "The application not responding" still occurs.

Update Windows:  Checking for the latest windows update and installing them may solve many problems. If Windows has not been updated for a long time, we suggest you check for the updates manually and then install them.

To check for Windows update, type "check for updates" and click the result. You will be automatically directed to the windows update section. Click check for updates. Windows will start checking for updates. If there are updates available, then install them. After the updates are installed ( if there are any to install) restart your computer and see if the problem persists.

Reinstall the Program:  If none of those as mentioned earlier procedures solves the issue, try reinstalling the program causing "The program is not responding" problem. There may be program files which can be corrupted, or there are incorrect program settings. Moreover, by reinstalling the program, you will have the recent version of that program.

To uninstall it, open the run dialogue box and type the "appwiz. CPL" command. Press enter or click Ok to execute the command. In the programs and features window, locate the program and uninstall it by right-clicking on it and choosing Uninstall from the Drop-down menu. Now download and install a fresh copy and see if the problem persists. This will solve the System applications not working error too.
