Streaming online or watching movies has become a part of our life now since the lockdown. And since then it has also become a part of our everyday life rather than our leisure time. And when the laptop or PC Speakers are Not Working, this could be very frustrating. So your laptop will have no sound when the PC speakers are not working. Even if the PC speakers are not working, headphones do, but the headphones do not provide the same level of satisfaction as the speakers do. And you cannot listen through headphones when you have to see something with a group. However, you do not need to worry since this is something that can be quickly resolved. But before troubleshooting, we need to know the possible reasons behind it.

Reasons behind PC speakers are not working

1. Volume of the speaker

The first thing that we need to look for when PC speakers are not working is the volume. If you are using a laptop speaker with no external speaker connected, turn the volume up using controls on the keyboard.

You can see the volume buttons on your laptop keyboard or a secondary function of another key indicated with the blue text. To activate these keys, hold the Fn key and the secondary function key at the same time.

2.Volume of software is ON

What to note is that external speakers are controlled by software. For example, if the software speaker's volume is lowered or off in the software settings, it would not make a change how high the external speakers are turned up.

The speakers won't produce sound. Therefore users should verify the sound settings in the software are properly turned up.

3.Mute is on:

Another common problem that we avoid is the mute button accidentally activated on the keyboard.

To check if the mute button is on, look on the lower side of the taskbar for a symbol with a cross over a speaker

4. Default playback device in Windows:

If your laptop has a Windows operating system, make sure that the correct playback device is set as the default device for sound output.

If the wrong device is set as the default playback device, then sound won't come out of the expected device, may it be speaker or headphones.

5. Windows speaker setup:

For Microsoft Windows, do make sure that the speaker setup is correct.

6.Corrupt Windows System files:

Yes, you read it right; due to many reasons such as introducing viruses, Windows system files can get corrupted. If the system files are responsible for sound output that gets corrupted, the computer can stop producing any kind.

If the laptop was producing sound recently but is not now, you can try restoring Windows to a previous point when the sound was working. If the sound is not working is corrupt windows files, restoring windows to a point where the sound did work should resolve it.

7. Bad sound card:

If the issue is not due to the software like system files, it might be because of the hardware issue. Likewise, for any hardware component in a laptop, the device producing sound can also fail. Do make sure the computer sound card works properly by connecting another pair of speakers or headphones to the computer. If another pair of speakers or headphones don't work, it is most likely that the sound card is experiencing issues.

8.Bad Speakers:

If different connecting pairs of speakers or headphones work, then most probably, the speakers are bad. Then you should contact the manufacturer of the speakers or computers for a new replacement if they are still under warranty. Also, you can buy a new pair of speakers and connect them to your computer.

What to do when PC speakers are not working?

Now that we have seen possible reasons behind your laptop speakers not working, now we can see some troubleshooting about it.

Try Some Headphones:

We all do if the PC  speakers are not working is connecting external speakers or headphones. So if you are having trouble with the laptop's built-in speakers, we can plug in external speakers or headphones. If you get a sound from them, you might have a hardware problem with the laptops' built-in speakers. If you have a pair of USB headphones, you can try plugging those in, too, since they can bypass the default audio driver and indicate where the problem might lie.

Repair The Speakers:

If you cannot fix the problem in software, then there is a possibility that the speakers themselves are broken or the cable connecting it has come loose inside your laptop computers. If you can look in for a repair manual of your laptop computer, then don't be afraid to crack it open and call in the professionals. You can also send it to the manufacturer if it's under warranty, find a local shop that can diagnose a problem for you.

Disable Audio Enhancement:

If you are having audio trouble, then Microsoft recommends disabling any audio enhancement that might be turned on. From the same sound menu, select the audio device you are trying to use, click on properties, and then poke around the options that appear. Also, make sure that the right supported formats are checked, any enhancements are disabled, and that exclusive mode is unchecked in the Advanced tab. Also, try turning off any spatial sound enhancement well. Try playing the audio again and see if any of those options were the cause of your troubles.

Update Your BIOS:

It's a rare case where a hardware incompatibility, software update, or windows reinstallation can cause your sound system to stop working, and you need to take something in the BIOS. For this you can reboot your system and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, usually by pressing Delete, F2, or some other key at the startup. Firstly, make sure that your sound card is enabled in the BIOS, as it could have gone disabled at some point. If this doesn't help, then compare the current version of your BIOS or UEFI version with that of the latest version on your laptop's manufacturer website. It could be possible that your manufacturer must have released a new version recently, and it might be worth updating. But be very careful and so read the instructions carefully and proceed accordingly, as a BIOS update can also break things if done improperly.

Install or Update your Drivers:

The easiest method to deal with the laptop keyboard that won't work is to update the driver. For updating the driver, you need to follow the following procedures. Click on Start, and from the options, click on device manager. The Device Manager option will appear so click on this. Now browse the list of devices until you see the keyboard and then expand the list. Right-click the keyboard device (usually Standard PS/2 Keyboard ) and select Properties > Driver. Now from the options available, click on update driver. After clicking on update driver, wait while windows find a new driver and install it. After updating, test the keyboard on a word processor or perhaps the windows notepad app; well, it should now work.

Still, no luck?

This time, select Uninstall Device from the available options and wait for the driver to be removed. Once done, reboot the windows and wait while the driver is reinstalled. We can use an alternative that we can use Action > Scan for Hardware Changes to prompt the windows to install the driver. Note that apart from these two options, there is also a rollback driver option. Unless a new driver is installed, this option will be grayed out at most times, possibly as a part of a windows update. If this option is available and your keyboard has recently stopped working, click on the rollback driver and wait for the new driver.

Change your Audio Device:

What happens is sometimes your speakers are well and good and working correctly, but windows are directing sound to the wrong output device. Still, in this case, particularly if you have plugged in a USB audio device or are plugged into an external HDMI monitor that doesn't have speakers. To fix this, right-click the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar and choose Sounds to enter the audio preferences. Under the playback tab, find the device you are using or want to use if you cannot see it try right-clicking and checking Show Disabled Devices, then select the output device and click the SET default button. If you are unsure which device you have to use, try each of the devices in the list until you hear audio.

Check your volume:

As we have discussed earlier in the reasons section, there are most of the times when we accidentally mute our system volume. Click the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the taskbar, and make sure that your work is unmuted and turned up. If you have external speakers connected, make sure that they are turned on and up too. When you drag the windows volume slider and let go, you ought to hear a ding, and if not, then the problem lies somewhere else. If you do hear a jingle, there is a chance that the app you are trying to use is muted. Do make sure that the music player, video player, or any other app you are using is turned up and muted. The same goes for YouTube and other browsers, where it's easy to mute accidentally, which can be frustrating to diagnose later.

Conclusion:

There is nothing more irritating than your laptop or PC speakers are not working. There is nothing like cranking up some tunes to keep your momentum going during your workday, especially during this lockdown period when everyone is busy with their work from home. It can kill your grooving moves. But not to worry, dear readers, as we are here to troubleshoot your very problem for why your laptop speakers are not working. We have mentioned above so many reasons why your laptop might have stopped working and also troubleshooting them. But what if any of these troubleshooting ideas don't work. Well, not to worry, if your laptop is under warranty or you know a reputable repair shop, then the device could be repaired with the minimum of effort. Meanwhile, for a substitute, you can use external speakers or headphones. And also, you can use USB cabled speakers.
