Hello Friends,

For our laptop users who face issues of the laptop screen and keyboard connector being broken and wondering how to fix a broken keyboard connector on a laptop motherboard. So guys here in this blog we talk about broken laptop motherboard connectors and how to fix motherboard keyboard connectors. Stay connected with us and read this article about laptop keyboard connectors broken till the end.

Your connector has a very delicate mechanism because it can get very easily damaged if you apply too much force while trying to unlock it. In that, you need a new laptop keyboard connector locking clip.

The laptop keyboard ribbon cable locking clip or the laptop ribbon cable clip retainer is made of thin plastic and if it gets damaged then you are in great trouble since this part is not sold separately.

However, still, it happened and the damage is done, then how to fix a broken keyboard?

The most common keyboard connector to laptop types has a base which is (white in my case) and a cable retainer (brown in my case).

When the laptop keyboard connector clip is closed then the cable is secured between the retainer and base.

When the retainer applies some pressure on the cable then it makes contact with the pins which are inside the connector.

To use the laptop keyboard connector pinout properly, you need to move the retainer about 2 millimeters in the direction shown by two yellow arrows.

The attached base must remain on the retainer.

After which you can pull the laptop keyboard cable and remove the keyboard. This is how to remove laptop keyboard connectors.

If you aren’t careful enough then you can move the retainer too far and might break it.

You can see the retainer broken on both sides since it is missing both the locking hooks. The laptop keyboard locking clip has broken now.

Do not throw away the retainer so that you can still use it.

Without the locking clip, the cable will not stay inside the connector.

Here’s how you can fix this type of damage.

First, position the broken piece the way it was inserted before. Then carefully insert the cable into the connector in case the cable goes above the retainer.

Carefully push the broken clip back in place while holding the cable for which you can use a small screwdriver.

Even though it has two broken hooks the clip fits tightly into the connector. Then test the keyboard by securing the connection with sticky tape. This would work fine.

Here’s one more type of connector. The only difference is that its keyboard cable is routed under the locking clip. You need to fix it in the same way as the previous connector.

There is another type of keyboard connector on laptop motherboards where the cable is inserted vertically.

You’ll have to move the locking clip (brown piece) about 2 millimeters up in the direction shown by two yellow arrows to unlock the connector and after that, you need to pull the keyboard cable (green arrow) by removing the keyboard. If you move the laptop keyboard clip too far it will break, therefore insert the laptop keyboard port cable into the Lenovo laptop keyboard connector and then position the broken retainer correctly that is behind the cable by carefully pushing it in.

The cable should be secured inside the hp laptop keyboard connector even with a broken retainer.

There is also another way to laptop keyboard ribbon cable repair:

If you have lost the broken “Locking clip”.

You need to get some “electrical tape” on the back of the “flat cable” for some “thickness”.

Insert the tape on the right side where there are no visible connections.

Carefully push the cable into the connector by which it will not come loose and the keyboard connector laptop will work just fine!

PS/2 and USB are the most common keyboard connectors.

Keyboards can be connected through dedicated keyboard connectors or through the USB port. Extremely old systems use the 5-pin DIN connector, whereas newer systems use the smaller 6-pin mini-DIN connector (also called the PS/2 keyboard connector) shown in Figure 3-1.

No. In fact, PS/2 ports are worse than USB or serial, because they don't support plugging a device in without a reboot, and on many systems you have to get them the right way round or they don't work. In fact, PS/2 ports are only provided for compatibility with old keyboards and mice these days.

USB, in full universal serial bus, technology used to connect computers with peripheral devices. Mini USB port

Look on the bottom of your mouse or keyboard for a PS/2 symbol or picture, and a USB symbol or picture. Your mouse or keyboard came with a similar PS/2 to USB or USB to PS/2 adapter.

The answer is yes, a USB HID device (mice and keyboards) must understand the alternative PS/2 protocol in order to function in PS/2 port using USB-PS/2 adapter. Not every USB mice or keyboard support the PS/2 mode.

If the PC has a PS2 port then it will work on any operating system the PC supports.
